Prints

Proof prints are made on RC paper. The proof allows me to study and plan my approach to creating a fine print. Pinhole negatives can be fairly primitive and necessitate close scrutiny as well as craftsmanship in the darkroom. For this body of work, I use Ilford Multigrade paper, Matt surface. The reason for this choice is because I favor pictorialism and want to mimic to some degree the feeling of a charcoal drawing yet remain distinctly photographic. I develop in Dektol for 3 minutes, use 2 fixing baths, selenium tone, and finally sepia tone each print. The combination of paper and toners is what produces the subtle but important chocolate tone. The final prints are small and intimate because it just seems right for these photographs. It's quite satisfying to grab a cup of good coffee or a glass of fine wine, sit down with a stack of photographs on your lap, a fire in the stove, perhaps have some friends over, and enjoy the moment.
